THE DISTRICT OFFICE SUMMER HOURS ARE
MONDAY - THURSDAY 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
First Grade Writing
Instructor: Ms. Kaitlin Powers
At Highland, we use a writing curriculum called Every Child a Writer (ECaW). We work on writing every day for 1 hour, which is made up of 15 minute rotations, as well as for 15 additional minutes of demonstrated writing.†

One rotation during writing is meeting in small groups with me. This gives me the chance to meet with each student daily and target specific learning goals with every group. The second writing rotation is directed writing, where students complete an additional writing assignment that is given to them while they meet with me. The third center is "brain break", where students engage in various literacy based activities of their choice. Finally, the last station is handwriting. We use "Seeing Red" as our handwriting guide, so students are able to learn and practice their letter formation daily. So far, ECaW has been great in our classroom and students have really responded well to this curriculum! I am excited to see the future gains and continued development of each student as the year goes on.†
